About Us

We are a learning guild with members at all levels of experience. By sharing a love of hand-written letters, we build friendships and a greater confidence in our art.

Various types of day and evening classes involving many styles of lettering are available through area adult education and town recreation programs. Classes on related subjects which can enhance hand-lettered work (such as bookbinding, paper and card making, rubber stamping, watercolor and reproduction techniques) are also available in the Rochester area and often are taught by Guild members.

The Guild holds many “working” meetings featuring both local and traveling instructors, which appeals to students with a wide range of skills and interests. The last workshop featured an Italic refresher, study of Neuland, and a third day of design . The next workshop will feature Gail Vick Barnhardt with Foundational study and a third "Master class" day..

In 2004, the Guild hosted nationally-known calligraphy instructor Reggie Ezell. This was a very special opportunity. Reggie is a talented and enjoyable teacher and presents a comprehensive look at the many skills necessary to do fine calligraphy.

Eight of our members attended Letterforum 2006 in July; we drove to James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA and spent a week immersed in calligraphy and visiting with calligraphers from around the world. This was the largest group from our guild to attend a conference. New friends were made, and old friendships were strengthened. We all grew in our art; techniques and styles we've learned will certainly show up in future exhibits!
The next conference will be in Chicago, Illinois.
